I hate to use public restrooms. HATE it. I avoid it whenever possible. However. Lately there has been a new reason to hate it. Why in the world do some women think it is okay to talk on their cell phones while in a stall? I DON'T WANT TO TWINKLE WITH WHOEVER IS ON THE OTHER END OF THAT CALL. I really don't. Is that irrational? I don't think so. And how to handle?
In the recent past I have tried:
*incessant flushing, so that the call is compromised. (not terribly mature or 'green' of me, but oddly satisfying as the lady talks about how frustrated she is that she can't hear. hee hee.)
*asking the woman to please take her call somewhere else. (oh yeah. that went over well.)
*waiting.
*waiting, then going in to stall ONLY AFTER Cell Lady emerges from stall and leaves.
*leaving.
*ignoring it. i hate this though, and it has to be a serious emergency and i'd rather have another answer.
got any? (or am i really the only one who thinks this is tacky and unacceptable behavior which must be stopped?)

It always cracks me up when I hear a toilet flush while I'm on the phone with somebody (usually a member of my extended family, lol) I've sort of become the anti cell gal anyway, because I hate when people talk really loud on them in the store, or while waiting in line for coffee, or WHILE CUTTING ME OFF (although I can't tell how loud they're being then...)
Don't get me wrong. Love the invention of cell phones, but I'm just one of those whisper into the cell gals. Probably sound like a crank caller, lol.
Ha ha ha!
I didn't even know people actually did that!
I always thought it was an unspoken taboo that everyone hides. Well, ya might as well have fun with it, as it truly is a gross place to talk. I think next time it happens you should make some really rude sounds as loud as you can and as long as you can! ha ha ha ha! I mean come on! Do they really think that talking in a bathroom is going to be a quiet and classy atmosphere? ew.
Terribly rude. Must be stopped. I thought you had pretty much covered the possible options to achieve this goal until I read Sheen's comment. SO FUNNY!!!!!
Of course, the horror of stepping out of my stall to the shocked gazes of the other bathroom patrons, just might keep me from employing this one. 8^)
Well the thing that is the most snarky that I thought of is carrying a whoopy cushion in your purse and keep pressing on it making 'wind' noises really LOUD. You could also add some groaning. The only problem is that you'd have to carry a paper sack in your purse too...to wear over your head when you come out of your stall.
heehee
People don't get it do they?!?! I like to flush while on they are on phone, hoping that it comes across the line. I hate it but at the same time don't let it stop me b/c when you got to go you've got to go! I also have been known to push all the blowers at once to make lots of noise. So my way is to annoy others just as much as they annoy me. It's part of growing up as the baby of the family!
Wow, thats funny! I don't think I have ever had someone do that while I was in the bathroom. But it wouldn't bother me because the person on the other end of the phone doesn't know its me going to the bathroom, lol. But, if it DID bug me, I'd be rude back. Maybe turn on all the faucets and hand dryers and say "Sorry for the noise, I don't like others to hear me go to the bathroom on the other end of the phone." grin bashfully, and hit the stall!
The whoopie cushion idea is brilliant! LOL
I saw a comic strip a while back about this... the guy in one stall was answering the questions of the stranger in the next stall, until finally the one asking questions says something about "the idiot in the next stall keeps trying to talk to me, I'll have to call you back". I totally did not get that one... where they saying that the other guy was the rude one??
At any rate, flush away, I think it's beyond rude and tacky to talk on a cell phone in a bathroom. Or in a checkout line.
I say you adopt your most country accent and start narrating really loudly. "MAN I'VE GOTTA PEE! WHAT'S THAT SMELL IN HERE ANYWAY? SOMEBODY FAAARTED!! (knocking on the wall)HEY LADY, WAS THAT YOU?..." And then you just hope she doesn't end up being your kids school teacher the next year or something.
Got some great ideas here! I like the flushing idea!
I realize a cell phone is handy. But there ARE particular times that I make certain I don't touch one: bathroom is one and when I'm out eating a meal with my family. I've seen families eating at a restaurant with one person on the cell phone. I realize there are emergencies, but if its not an emergency, to me that's family time and it's rude to be on the phone while eating out (you know, just talking just to be talking). To me that's like a couple sitting at a restaurant while 1 of the 2 sits there and reads the paper.
I rambled. Sorry. The way cell phones are used in public really annoys me.......
Oh, does that get my goat! The first time it happened to me, I was in mid-pee. A lady decided to continue her call as she took a pee in the stall next to me. Ack! So the person on the other end of the phone call gets to hear a peeing duet! There should be signs on the back of the doors or something. "Please refrain from cell phone usage during urination. Thank you."
Oh. My. Gosh.
We, as a society, have sunk to a new low. Are you seriously telling me you have heard a person using a cell phone in the stall of a public restroom?
I think I might have to ask, "Do you MIND?" "Can't that call WAIT?"
I try to be a nice person. Christian love and all. But even if I managed to hold my tongue I would WAIT until she emerged from the stall and give her the "look," which I mastered in high school. You know the one. You look someone up and down like you are looking at something extremely distasteful. It always unnerves the other person. I used it on boys who made inappropriate comments or mean girls.
I can't handle when people talk amongst themselves (or to ME!) in a bathroom stall, much less use the telephone.
Ick ick ick!

I agree that using a cell phone in the restroom is ridiculous. Even at home. At least, to me it is. Not so much for the husband. Anyway, I would just ignore it. It is rude, and it might embarass the person into not doing it ever again, as there is no hiding the fact from the caller that they are in the bathroom. But maybe that is just me. I don't have the guts to talk to someone about their cell phone use in the bathroom. Clearly polite conversation is low on their list of social graces.
